Book Author
The 30th edition of this definitive annual resource provides expert historical background and contemporary analysis of the East and Southeast Asian regions. Updated for 1997, it offers essential insights for students, researchers, and international professionals.
For nearly twenty-five years, Dr. Steven A. Leibo served as the primary editor and author for the East and Southeast Asia volumes of the prestigious World Today Series. This 1997 edition marks a significant milestone in that tenure, offering the meticulous research and informed projections that became the hallmark of the series.
This volume is specifically designed to bridge the gap between historical foundations and contemporary developments. It provides just enough historical context on the evolution of Modern East and Southeast Asia to allow readers to grasp the complexities of the region’s current political and economic climate.
The book is structured to be both a deep-dive academic resource and a quick-reference guide:
Broad Introductory Chapters: Comparative analysis of the region as a whole.
Country-Specific Sections: Distinct, detailed chapters for each nation within the East, Southeast Asia, and Western Pacific regions.
Informed Projections: Expert analysis of future trends vital for government officials and potential investors.
While thorough enough for researchers and media professionals, the content is perfectly paced for a one-semester introductory course. Its commitment to factual accuracy and up-to-date detail has made it a staple for:
International Development Practitioners
Government and Media Professionals
Academic Students and Librarians

I was reminded of some of Pearl Buck's writings. Like hers, the storytelling in this book is very accurate of the times. It is a wonderful story with believable characters and a strong, interesting plot.
