Book Author
The 43rd edition of this definitive annual resource provides expert historical context and contemporary analysis of East and Southeast Asia. It offers essential regional insights for students, travelers, and international development professionals.
For nearly twenty-five years, Dr. Steven A. Leibo served as the primary author and editor for the East and Southeast Asia volumes of the prestigious World Today Series. This 2010 edition continues that legacy, providing the factual accuracy and informed projections necessary to understand one of the world’s most vital regions.
The volume is designed to bridge the gap between history and current events to help readers gain a thorough understanding of the region:
Evolution of Modern Asia: Provides the necessary historical background to explain contemporary regional developments.
Regional and Comparative Analysis: Features broad introductory chapters that explore regional trends and comparative politics.
Country-Specific Detail: Includes distinct, in-depth sections dedicated to each individual nation, including specialized sub-chapters for areas such as Tibet.
This edition specifically highlights the intersection of politics and the environment:
Political & Economic Trends: Analyzes the shifting power dynamics and financial climates of the Western Pacific.
Environmental Developments: Examines the ecological challenges facing the region in the 21st century.
Informed Projections: Offers expert analysis for those predicting future regional trends.
While thorough enough for researchers and media professionals, the content is specially designed as a concise introduction for students and travelers alike. It is perfectly structured for a one-semester introductory course or as a general library reference.

I was reminded of some of Pearl Buck's writings. Like hers, the storytelling in this book is very accurate of the times. It is a wonderful story with believable characters and a strong, interesting plot.
